As we commemorate Women’s History Month, HumCap proudly celebrates the resilience, achievements, and invaluable contributions of women not only in March but every day of the year. With over 50% of our workforce comprising of women, we’re honored to highlight the experiences and advice shared by the remarkable women of HumCap, featuring stories from Kaitlyn, Dana, Christina, Cherryl, and Clara.

Career Path Inspiration

When reflecting on her career journey, Dana shares “I honestly fell into HR by accident… but I quickly realized that I loved it. It checked all the boxes for me – helping people and companies, creating processes and procedures, solving problems, figuring out what makes people tick, a variety of tasks, and a never-ending opportunity to learn.”

Contributions to the Workplace Environment

At HumCap, collaboration and team support foster a positive workplace culture. Cherryl emphasizes this, highlighting the supportive community at HumCap. She shares, “I’ve never worked with a group of such talented and good-hearted women, ever.  Every woman is helpful and supportive of each other…very different than other work environments.” Dana echoes this sentiment, “Women and men support each other wholeheartedly, fostering a positive workplace environment.”

Balancing Professional and Personal Life

Finding a work/life balance is a common challenge for all. When asked how to manage this challenge, Kaitlyn hits on the importance of setting realistic expectations, stating, “It’s important to steer clear of pursuing perfection and instead aim for attainable goals in both your professional and personal life. Recognizing that there will be occasions when one area demands more attention than the other allows you to pursue harmony rather than an elusive perfect balance.” Dana reflects on this topic sharing the important lesson of learning that it’s okay to say “no” and that working more hours is not the key to being more productive or successful. Finding effective ways to communicate in and outside of work is essential to achieving balance.

Inspiration and Overcoming Challenges

Christina’s career journey underscores the importance of perseverance and advocacy. Her commitment to advocating for others stems from personal experiences. She shares, “I have been subjected to sexual harassment which led to the termination of an SVP. That experience was traumatic and changed how I handle investigations of that nature. I am more assertive when it comes to defending victims and ensuring workplaces are safe for everyone. I think even bad experiences are ones we can learn from.”

Dana’s experiences highlight the significance of learning from adversity. She shares inspiration from the unstoppable forces that are her mother and aunt who taught her “never to let age, gender, stereotypes, etc. stand in the way of achieving what (you) want. With very few exceptions, the only thing standing in the way of achieving my dreams was myself.”

Also drawing inspiration from her mother, Clara shares “she is superwoman – from becoming a single mom to beating cancer, she’s shown me that women are always stronger together and there is nothing we can’t do.”

Advice to Young Women Starting Their Careers

The women of HumCap offer invaluable advice to the younger generation of women starting their careers. Christina encourages: “Advocate for yourself, no one else will have your best interests at the forefront unless you do. Trust your instincts, as women we don’t always do that, and it is to our detriment.”

“Never be afraid to speak up, never be afraid to ask questions, and most importantly never let anyone tell you that you can’t do something because you are a woman.” – Dana

Clara shares advice she’s taken to heart, that sometimes all it takes is a simple reminder: “How hard can it be… boys do it.”
